A Punjab Thrill!
We were a walk in but were taken to a table without any fuss and greeted warmly and with a smile. The manager came over to assist with the menu and our choices, taking care to note our desired spice levels. My husband fancied a mixed grill but it was not on the menu, the manager noting the disappointment on his face quickly offered to arrange something with the chef and all was well again! The serving staff were very attentive, but not intrusive, in particular to my 7 year old son.
A delicious selection of food that was explained perfectly to us by the manager. It was cooked perfectly and according to our preferred spice levels. First an amuse bouche, compliments of the chef, watermelon with bean shoots mixed with spices, the sweet taste of the watermelon was a great contrast to the spices with the added benefit of cleansing your pallet. Scallops to start for my husband which he devoured, I had the spinach patties, which were delicious but could have done with some yoghurt as an accompaniment, (which had I have asked for it I'm sure would have been given). My brother had the samosas which were huge and beautifully hand prepared, he felt they could have done with more spice but his tolerance levels for spicey food are high. For mains, my husband was delighted with his spontaneously produced mixed grill - phew!! My brother had followed in his footsteps and was also delighted with the outcome. I had the mutton Rogan Josh and the meat was delicious and tender, with the sauce exactly as the manager described it. My son had the Daal Makhani with plain basmati rice, he devoured 2 platefuls much to our amusement! And when the waiter brought him a complimentary chocolate mousse dessert his face lit up, only to be later disappointed that he couldn't manage it all - regretting that 2nd plate of rice and daal no doubt! I tried the daal and thought it needed a little more tomato and a little less cream.
Can't comment on desserts we were too full, but took a picture of what we could have had if we hadn't over done it with the mains.
The restaurant decor is stunning, it is clean and bright with gorgeous marble floors. Beyond the floor length, arched windows draped with light, airy voiles are fabulous views of the canal. There is a wine cellar, an impressive bar and private dining areas. We chose to sit inside but there is a beautiful outside seating area, with patio heaters.
A little on the expensive side I thought, so perhaps a special occasion venue for most.
I will definitely return and if, as I do, you love Ushna then this place will not disappoint either.
