After a summer away we had a long overdue date night out at Butcher and Still. Having read previous mixed reviews we went with no expectations.
The Steakhouse is authentic in appearance, boasts a Chicago style bar with leather booth seating, gleaming tile-work, and only lacks the bothersome smokey atmosphere of an old school Steakhouse 😊
The wait staff were outstanding, extremely attentive to detail, allowing us to dictate to our liking the time between courses. We had arrived early Friday evening and watched the room fill to capacity through our visit. At no time did any table lack service. The open kitchen concept allowed us to watch the chef prepare cuts of meat and seafood and plate orders with superb standards.
Of course the restaurant itself has much to consider, including a large bread oven and sparkling bar with "classic prohibition-era cocktails". I ordered a Moscow Mule, not on the drink menu but mixed to perfection and served in the appropriate copper mug and straw.
The food was extravagant and delicious. For starters we shared the crab stuffed portobello mushroom. Crab meat was fresh and moist and mushroom was cooked appropriately to the tender stage.
The main courses, for me the braised short rib with cornbread and for a side the double stuffed potato, for him, the signature 14 oz filet with a side of jumbo steamed asparagus. Both plates arrived prepared to perfection. True to steakhouse standard, the meat was delicious and was only complimented by sauce flavors. The double stuff potato was splendid and dreamy and a must have for all!
For dessert, the classic "Tribune Tower" chocolate cake. The dessert boasts a fabulous 37 layers of cake and ganache and arrives with the signature Butcher knife nestled within the layers. This cake was every bit as satisfying in appearance as it was to the taste buds! The manager stopped by our table to ask how the meal was and I could not help but commend him on an excellent meal and service. He was so appreciative and unexpectedly comp'd our dessert!
Overall we highly recommend an evening spent at a table in Butcher and Still. It's romantic and high end and the service is excellent! We will most definitely return!
